Donald Trump has angered Game of Thrones producers by issuing a tweet influenced by the show saying ‘Sanctions are coming.’
The president shared the poster Friday, which sees a business-like photo of him used alongside the GoT typeface. It also references the show’s famous ‘Winter is coming’ catchprase, with Trump hijacking the Game of Thrones saying to announce renewed sanctions against Iran.
HBO’s official Twitter account responded: ‘How do you say trademark misuse in Dothraki?’ – the fictional language used in the fantasy TV series. Shortly before Trump posted the tweet, the White House’s official account explained the context, writing: ‘President @realDonaldTrump is reimposing all sanctions lifted under the unacceptable Iran deal.
The U.S. is reimposing the toughest sanctions ever on Iran, targeting many of the corrupt regime’s critical sectors.’ And afterwards they reproduced the president’s original message, topping it with a Trump-style caption which read: ‘
The United States has launched a campaign of economic pressure to deny the regime the funds it needs to advance its bloody agenda!’ Trump has reimposed sanctions lifted in 2015 over claims the Obama-era deal was ‘defective.’
He has done so after claims Iran has broken a promise not to develop nuclear weapons, and further claimed the regime has meddled in Syrian as well as Yemeni affairs. The US’s new sanctions are aimed at crippling Iran’s economy by targeting the country’s energy, shipping and banking sectors. An Iranian government spokesman says the country remains nonchalant about the sanctions being re-imposed.
