We all know Zayn, right? Handsome dude. Was part of one of the biggest boy bands on the planet for a bit. Currently has a supremely successful solo career. Ya, that guy.
Now, he might’ve been born and brought up in England, but the man still hasn’t forgotten his desi roots. He recently announced that he was working on a project with none other than A.R. Rahman.
In the lead up to his subcontinental debut, Zayn has been very active on Instagram, and has been uploading snippets of himself singing Hindi songs.*

It was all going fine until yesterday, when Zayn uploaded clips of him singing Kailash Kher’s beloved “Teri Deewani,” and the results weren’t as ~melodious~ as one would have hoped.
Let’s just say that even loyal Zayn fans have had trouble making peace with his more than rough vocals.
Zayn Malik's teri deewani cover was so cringy, had to hear the original 10 times to come out of that shock.

Of course, this isn’t to say that there aren’t people who’re actually 100% into it.

Like, it can’t be mentioned enough that Hindi is not the guy’s first language and he did make a really sincere effort…
But when you take on a song as classic and timeless as “Teri Deewani,” you’ve gotta deal with some backlash, man. It’s just the way the internet works.
For what it’s worth, Kailash Kher himself has approved of the cover and hopes to collab with Zayn in the future.
Although, he did also say that Zayn needed to learn the “proper nuances” of the song if he was serious about improving his Hindi singing chops.
Keep at it, Zayn. You’ll get there eventually.
